How the estimate works
The calculator multiplies the surface area of your project by an average amount of yarn per square inch for each yarn weight, then adjusts for how dense your stitches are. Thinner yarn needs more length to cover the same area, and tight stitches such as single crochet use more than open, lacy ones.
How accurate is it?
It is a planning estimate, not a pattern requirement. Your hook size, tension and stitch pattern all change the result, so the tool shows a range. If your pattern lists a yardage, always follow the pattern, and buy one extra skein from the same dye lot when you can.
