Ingredients
12 ounces ziti pasta
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 small onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 pound ground beef
24 ounces marinara sauce
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
15 ounces ricotta cheese
1 large egg
3 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 375°F and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the ziti until just al dente. Drain and set aside.
3. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, then stir in the garlic.
4. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess grease if needed.
5. Stir in the marinara sauce, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes.
6. In a medium bowl, mix the ricotta cheese, egg, 1 cup of the mozzarella, 1/4 cup of the Parmesan, and 1 tablespoon of the parsley.
7. Add the cooked ziti to the meat sauce and toss until evenly coated.
8. Spread half of the pasta mixture into the prepared baking dish. Spoon half of the ricotta mixture over the pasta.
9. Add the remaining pasta mixture, then dollop the rest of the ricotta mixture over the top.
10. Sprinkle with the remaining 2 cups mozzarella and 1/4 cup Parmesan.
11. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until hot and bubbly.
12. Broil for 1 to 2 minutes if you want a more golden top.
13. Let the baked ziti rest for 10 minutes, then garnish with the remaining parsley and serve.
Notes
Cook the pasta just to al dente so it does not become too soft after baking.
Let the casserole rest before serving so the layers hold together better.
Add a little extra marinara when reheating leftovers to keep the pasta moist.
