It is a perfect easy recipe for holiday dinners, family gatherings, dinner ideas, and festive food ideas when you want a warm, hearty side everyone will remember.

Ingredients

8 cups day-old bread cubes

1 pound ground sausage

2 medium apples, peeled and diced

1 medium onion, diced

3 celery stalks, diced

4 tablespoons butter

3 cloves garlic, minced

2 1/2 cups chicken broth

2 large eggs

1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

1 teaspoon dried sage

1 teaspoon dried thyme

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

2. If the bread is still soft, spread the cubes on a baking sheet and toast them for 8 to 10 minutes until slightly dry.

3. Cook the sausage in a large skillet over medium heat until browned and fully cooked, breaking it into crumbles as it cooks.

4. Transfer the cooked sausage to a plate and drain off excess grease, leaving a little behind for flavor.

5. Add the butter to the skillet, then cook the onion, celery, and diced apples for 5 to 7 minutes until softened.

6. Stir in the garlic, sage, thyme, salt, and black pepper, and cook for 1 minute more.

7. In a large bowl, combine the bread cubes, cooked sausage, and sautéed apple mixture.

8. Whisk the eggs with the chicken broth, then pour the mixture over the bread mixture.

9. Add the chopped parsley and gently toss until everything is evenly moistened.

10. Transfer the stuffing to the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.

11. Bake uncovered for 35 to 40 minutes until the top is golden and the center is hot.

12. Let the stuffing rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use slightly stale bread for the best texture because it absorbs the broth without turning mushy.

Choose firm apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith so they hold their shape while baking.

Add a splash of extra broth before reheating leftovers to keep the stuffing moist and tender.
