Description

These Easy Chicago-Style Apple Slices are a nostalgic, handheld take on classic deep-dish apple pie. With a buttery, flaky crust and a warmly spiced apple filling, they’re the perfect fall dessert for potlucks, lunchboxes, or holiday gatherings. Whether you’re after a quick breakfast, a cozy dessert, or a crowd-pleasing snack, this easy recipe delivers. Think apple pie, but simplified—and shareable. Great for family baking nights or anyone looking for comforting food ideas and easy dessert ideas.

Ingredients

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes

1 large egg, beaten

3 to 4 tablespoons cold water

6 cups thinly sliced Granny Smith apples

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 tablespoon lemon juice

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons milk, for brushing

Instructions

1. Whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

2. Stir in the beaten egg and cold water just until the dough comes together. Divide into two disks and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

3. Preheat the oven to 375°F and grease a 9×13-inch metal sheet pan.

4. Toss the sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and flour. Set aside.

5. Roll out one dough disk to fit the bottom and sides of the pan. Press into the pan and let the edges come slightly up the sides.

6. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the crust.

7. Roll out the second dough disk and place over the apples. Press edges to seal and cut slits in the top for steam.

8. Brush the top crust with milk.

9. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until golden brown and bubbling.

10. Let cool completely before cutting into slices.

Notes

Keep the butter very cold and work quickly to maintain flakiness in the crust.

Always let the bars cool before cutting to avoid a messy, runny filling.

Using a metal sheet pan ensures a crisper bottom crust and better overall texture.
